David Bennett BEcons, BAppSc (ClinSc), BOstSc Registered Osteopath
David graduated from RMIT and began practicing in 1999 with a Bachelor of Clinical Science and Bachelor of Osteopathic Science, and previous to this he completed a Bachelor of Economics and studied 2 years of Architecture. He has practiced in the South West of WA, Auckland and Perth; he has also pursued extensive Osteopathic training in the US. Combining his experience of Architecture and Osteopathy, David also has an interest in therapeutic product design.
David practices 2 entirely different methods of treatment, and allocates different times of the day for each.It is recommended therefore that you overview the brief descriptions below, and choose the treatment method that feels best for you.

FUNCTIONAL OSTEOPATHY PRECONCEPTION, PREGNANCY, MOTHERS/BABIES AND ADULTS INTERESTED IN WHOLISTIC HEALTHCARE.
Firstly David is a Functional Osteopathic Practitioner - this means that he looks to find the health within a patient's body (rather than focusing upon symptoms and finding problems to fix), and encourages this health to spread throughout the entire person. Much like finding a body of water that has been dammed up, with fields surrounding it that are dry and cracked from drought: the objective of treatment is to harness the internal gravitational force within the water itself to restore normal irrigation into the withering fields. As the body begins to function as an integrated whole, it's own self-healing mechanism activates: and as such, deeper problems begin to resolve themselves. Where stress or inertia has taken a hold of the nervous system, David will utilise a subtle mechanical percussion device from the USA. David's approach to Functional Osteopathy is a predominantly bio-energetic method of treatment, that achieves physical, emotional and spiritual change through a soft touch method. This inner method of treatment is David's passion.
David is also a Structural Osteopathic Practitioner - this means that he directly addresses the compressive postural affects of gravity and any history of physical injury that has altered body mechanics. This is achieved with a combination of spinal deep fascial release, minimalist spinal manipulation, long axis anti-gravity decompression of the pelvis, lumbar and cervical spine and 24hr anti-inflammatory poultice application.
An individual approach to Osteopathy
The nature of any health practitioner will be influenced by his or her own life history. And so it is that David’s first weeks of life were defined by a life-saving forceps delivery, subsequent neurosurgery to address a traumatic bleed upon the brain, and time spent in intensive care. With the absence of any professional assistance in those early years (such as Osteopathic treatment), David subsequently experienced a lifetime of auditory and visual learning difficulties.
Challenges that occur in the very early stages of life, can result in instinctive senses of perception being retained into adulthood. Examples might be the ability to ‘sense’ what other people are feeling, the ability to ‘communicate’ with animals, and an unspoken awareness of a deeper presence and guiding consciousness within Nature. Because of his background, David has a natural sensitivity and similar awareness - and it is this that informs and guides David’s treatment method.
David has a natural empathy, and a heart felt passion for helping people during the periods of preconception, pregnancy, mothers/babies, and for adults wishing to rediscover their original health within.
David's family has been living in the beautiful Dunsborough region for 38 years, and after many years away he has decided to return home.
David has pursued extensive international (USA) training in Biodynamic and Paediatric Cranial Osteopathy (Craniosacral) with Dr James Jealous (Retired Osteopathic Physician and Obstetrician); a method of treatment that is ideally suited to treatment of babies and during pregnancy. In making a contribution towards the peaceful entry into life for others (and witnessing the outcomes of therapeutic changes following a difficult birth), David has experienced the greatest possible fulfillment.
David's therapeutic interest also includes the the treatment of adults. In this regard, his primary intention is to assist in re-discovering a person's original health within. This is the same health that is so naturally expressed within babies and children: yet so frequently forgotten within busy adults. If a person has resistance or inertia of habit, then David looks to release tensions held within the deep fascias of the body, and uses spinal manipulation only as the very last resort. The deep fascia holds the tissue memory of often long forgotten stress and physical traumas. It is through the ongoing accumulation of tension within the deep fascia, that people gradually lose their capacity to express health through movement. This includes the general movements of daily activity; it also includes the inner movements of vital organs, of blood, lymph and cerebrospinal fluids, and the electrical impulses flowing throughout the entire nervous system; all of these movements are influenced by the deep fascia, and all of them are necessary for sustaining life.
Remarkably (as is often the case), challenges within one aspect of life bring heightened capacities within another. As a consequence of his background, David has a natural affinity for kinesthetic perception: instead of relying so heavily upon the most common senses of hearing and seeing, he utilises the sense of subtle movement (and it's corresponding inner landscape of perception) to 'read' a living story within a person's body. The capacity to listen to a person's body with one's hands and other intuitive perceptions, is an essential defining feature of Osteopathic Medicine.
David and his father built an Osteopathic clinic together on the family farm, just 10 minutes outside Dunsborough. It is a labour of love, having been built from recycled materials. The clinic is situated in a peaceful bush setting with a winter creek that flows in front of the treatment room. There is the occasional visiting family of kangaroos and a birdbath for attracting a vast array of local bird life. Dunsborough Osteopathy offers the calm environment to deeply relax and rediscover a self-healing capacity within.
Australian Osteopaths are primary health care providers, and use a purely hands-on form of manual medicine. Historically Osteopathic Medicine has had a full scope of medical practice. Today this is still the case, except outside the US Osteopaths do not practice in hospitals, nor do they provide life saving intervention in emergency situations. Osteopaths are ideally suited to treating both acute and chronic conditions through hands-on treatment. It is their primary intention to activate the body's own self-healing and self-regulating capacity. In this regard, Osteopathic treatment may eliminate or diminish the need for Allopathic drug therapy or surgical intervention. Where Osteopathic treatment is not indicated, the Osteopath will refer a patient to the relevant health provider.
